Dirt Bisquits: a sad reality…

This news article covers a very bad situation in Haiti:

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — It was lunchtime in one of Haiti’s worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti’s poorest can’t afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country’s central plateau…. (Read More)

Java Code Conventions

This post is for all the students involved in my projects. Please read this: JavaCodeConventions.pdf .

Is a short presentation reporting some code conventions which i believe are really useful and which i ask you to follow. This is a complement and a memorandum of those rules you already learned in the Software Engineering courses.

The presentation has been gently provided by Stefano Orlandi, which i like to thank.

Stupid Gadget: free delivery

I’ve found (thanks to Alessandro Giusti) a very nice website… it is loaded of
funny stuff (green laser pointers, gadgets, LED lights, Bouncing balls… ) for very
cheap prices and moreover they have FREE-SHIPPING WolrdWide!!!
I have no idea on how they can survive paying for the shipping of items
of 1,2,5 $ … but that’s it!
I test it a couple of time and they actually deliver… you can pay credit card
or Paypal (better, safer)…
It is ideal to buy, cables, connectors, adaptors (iPod, PSP, DS…), which are
very expensive if bought from the original producer.

IPhone 1.1.2 OOB Software Unlock

There is light for the poor souls locked (literally) on a 1.1.2 OOB iPhone…

http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2008/01/112-otb-unlocked.html

The bad news is that so far the procedure looks a little complicated and there  are chances that you might brick your phone during the process. I hope the process will be made smoother and easier. I expect lines in front of Apple Stores to buy the last 1.1.2 OTB… before the 1.1.3 OTB will start to flow on shelves…

Restaurants: Japanese-France fusion at Orris

Tonight I tried a restaurant called Orris on:

2006 Sawtelle Boulevard
Los Angeles, California 90025
(310) 268-2212

{mosmap width=’500’|height=’400’|lat=’52.052312’|lon=’4.447141’|zoom=’3’| zoomType=’Large’|zoomNew=’0’|mapType=’Satellite’|showMaptype=’1’|overview=’0’|text=’sv DWO’|lang=”| key=’ABQIAAAA63E9tRg5bU9VNy6Sly96_hRza8tTUe5hEHisz_2baX8NoHGXNRR0We0VrwqtYL7LHZBMxCIbQUOcnw’}

The style is Japanese-France fusion… small portion “a la” novelle cuisine, a good mix of meats and seafood. Gentle interesting tastes. The wine list is small but well selected. Price for a dinner for two with 3 glasses of wine 3 entreé and sweet is about 70$. Complimentary dessert wine (Moscato) and a elegant but friendly waiter made the experience worth the time and money.

No reservation, so i would suggest to go on low-nights.

Environmental impact

Lately i’m being concerned about the environmental impact of my life. My feeling about this is that one cannot attempt BIG actions, in particular not if they require to heavily modify the life style. Why is that, just because it is hard to “resist” and being consistent. So the very simple solution is moving step by step… my first step? changing the light bulbs in my house to eco-lights… my choice ikea cheap one… but for a good article on how to choose your green lights check this:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/06/22/earlyshow/living/home/main2965734.shtml

Next step? i was planning to go for small solar-panels in order to make all my battery-based gadgets: cel, laptop, mp3 players etc.. at zero impact… i know this represent 1/1000 of the impact of a dryer, but its a starting point. Being battery power they work with low voltage and do not require high-peak of current…. (to be continued)

Iphone 1.1.2 OTB Unlock: bad news

The category listing this article is fun-stuff… unfortunately not much fun this time… this

http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2008/01/notes-on-112-otb-software-unlock.html

is a post by George Hotz summarizing bad news on the software unlock for iPhone 1.1.2 OTB…

I think that all this hacking around iPhone is actually producing a very good result:

Apple is working hard to fix all the security bugs of iPhone. Question is why Apple cares to

limit is own market? the answer is simple… each month for each customer using iPhone out

of the 60$ they pay to AT&T (or other carrier in europe) Apple take a slice… how big?

rumors say 11-18$… so each hacked phone is less-money a month in Apple pocket 🙂
